| The other ties that bind: Shared stories and community cohesion by Rich Stadtmiller What binds a community together? Common goals? Common ideals? Common adversaries? Institutions? The lifeblood of Community is its people. Community building, like politics, is retail. What binds Community is what binds its people. Shared experiences are the binding factor at any given moment and shared memories extend those ties across time and space. In his presentation, Rich will explore how this subtle and pervasive concept applies in multiple situations and how awareness in this area can lead to beneficial changes for a community. How you will benefit from this presentation: The examination of concepts central to Community can apply across the diverse spectrum of communities. Attendees will be able to examine the fundamentals of community cohesion that are often ignored. They will learn from real life examples how abstract principles can apply in their own contexts. The presentation will also touch on the part that shared stories play in reinforcing community standards/mores. How this presentation will arouse you: By raising consciousness on the importance of community cohesion and the means of building it, it is hoped that the presentation will inspire attendees to adjust what they already do to draw their respective communities closer together. The use of stories in the presentation will convey the critical information while providing a live example of its effects.
